Understand White Spots with an Ayurvedic Perspective:
White spot, also known as Vitiligo, is a condition in which the skin loses its color due to low melanin, and the affected area appears lighter than the natural color or turns white.
In Ayurveda, a white spot is known as “Shwitra” or “Kilasa,” a skin disorder mainly caused by a pitta imbalance. When pitta got disturbed for some reason, it affected the blood and disturbed pigmentation; therefore, white patches appeared on the skin surface. In the advanced stage, it goes into a tridoshic condition as it is affected by Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Causes and symptoms of White spots (Vitiligo):
Causes:
Many factors contribute to white spots, whether it's environmental, physical, or genetic. Let's talk about the main causes behind this:
-
Genetic factors: A family history of vitiligo can increase the risk of developing white spots or vitiligo.
-
Psychological reasons: Psychological conditions like stress, anxiety, and depression can trigger or exaggerate the issue.
-
Autoimmune reasons: Immune problems can affect the melanocyte cells. These cells help in melanin (colour-making pigments).
-
Chemical contacts: Using products with high chemical content, such as creams, shampoos, nail polish, and other products like bindi, kajal, and more, can increase the risk of developing vitiligo.
-
Having the wrong diet: Consuming toxic foods like fish, milk, sour, and salt together can increase toxins in the body and harm the skin.
Symptoms:
Some general signs and symptoms of Vitiligo can include:
-
White patches on the skin: White patches can appear on the mucous or on the outer skin, such as hands, legs, face, or lips.
-
Early greying of hair: Hair in areas like eyebrow, scalp, eyelashes, and beard greyed before age, and looks unusual.
-
Itching or burning sensation: A burning or itching sensation occurs before new patches appear.
-
Looks sharp and grows slowly: The sign of vitiligo is that it grows slowly and with sharp edges.
Why is Vitiligo common in India?
An earlier article showed that the prevalence of vitiligo in India is a much higher rate than in other countries (such as 2-4 % in Gujarat). Here are some common factors that can be responsible for this increase:
-
Genetic tendency can be one of the biggest reasons for vitiligo.
-
High intake of toxic and incompatible foods.
-
Following an unhealthy lifestyle and taking too much stress or other psychological pressure.
-
Excessive use of chemical products like bindi, kajal, hair color, and rubber sleepers
