In people with diabetes, foot ulcers are common. It creates extreme discomfort & can trigger various health issues. Therefore, it is generally advised to take early precautions and some natural measures that can prevent its onset and infections.

Ayurvedic Preventive Measures for Diabetic Foot

It’s said prevention is better than cure; therefore, it’s good not to chase after treatments and take precautions that can protect you from getting diabetic foot. 

  • Trim your nails straight across and file edges to prevent ingrown toenails. These can stimulate foot-related issues. 
  • Keep your feet clean by regularly washing them with lukewarm water and thoroughly drying them. 
  • Avoid roaming around barefoot. 
  • Avoid wearing well-fitted, cushioned shoes indoors and outdoors to avoid pressure, friction, or injury to the foot. 
  • Don’t cut corns or calluses by yourself; take professional help. 

10 Ayurvedic Treatments to Help Heal Diabetic Foot Ulcers

1. Wash Your Feet with Triphala Herbal Decoction 

Triphala decoction is used to wash diabetic wounds or foot ulcers. This preparation has antimicrobial and cleansing effects, which help clean necrotic tissue and prepare the wound for healing applications.

To prepare this decoction, take some lukewarm water, put some Triphala in it, and soak your leg in it for 5-10 minutes.

2. Practice Tiktadighrita Treatment 

Tiktadighrita is an Ayurvedic treatment for diabetic foot, which involves the application of medicated ghee with herbs like neem, patola, and turmeric. It is traditionally used for treating chronic, non-healing wounds.

Take medicated ghee and add herbs like neem and patola to it. Then, warm it slightly and apply locally, or as directed by an Ayurvedic physician.

3. Do a Sesame Oil Massage Regularly

Regularly massage your feet with sesame oil. This will help enhance blood circulation in that area and help prevent neuropathy and dryness. 

4. Take Haritaki Churna at Night 

This Ayurvedic treatment involves taking at least 5 g of haritaki churna at night with lukewarm water. It helps with detoxification, boosts metabolism and supports glycemic control, and heals wounds.

5. Apply Katupila Kalka Paste to your Foot

This Ayurvedic treatment involves taking Katupila leaves and mixing them with sesame oil, and applying them to your foot. It helps people with diabetes reduce pain, swelling, and supports tissue regeneration.

6. Perform Leech Therapy 

This is an ancient procedure used to treat infected ulcers and reduce local inflammation. To perform this procedure, apply medicinal leeches to the cleaned diabetic foot ulcer area, where they suck blood and leave for 20-45 minutes. 

7. Apply Jatyadi Taila Oil to your Feet

Oils like Jatyadi taila have herbs that reduce inflammation and promote new tissue formation. This treatment involves the procedure of washing your foot and then applying medicated herbal oil to the area affected by the ulcer.

8. Practice Vimlapana

In this procedure, the affected area and surrounding tissue are massaged softly using medicated oils for 15-20 minutes per session for 10-45 days. It is done to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and heal wounds..

9. Apply Manjisthadi Taila to your Feet

You can prepare this Ayurvedic oil at home with Manjistha, turmeric, and sariva. It is applied around ulcers or non-healing diabetic wounds to reduce swelling, supply fresh blood to the area, and help with wound closure.

10. Try Turmeric-Honey Dressing

Mix turmeric and honey to prepare a smooth paste, then apply it to the affected area. This natural paste is commonly used for small ulcers or wounds and may help support faster healing.

Conclusion

A diabetic foot can be treated through self-management. But it needs the right and consistent care. In Ayurveda, various treatment methods are used, such as Prakshalana, Vimlapana, and Leech Therapy etc, to treat ulcers.
